Secured loan customers 'may be struggling with energy bills'

15/08/2008
People who have taken out secured loans in order to deal with a lack of finances may struggle to pay extra for energy bills.

Figures from uSwitch.com show that 31 per cent of people found it hard to pay their energy bills before prices went up at the end of July.

In order to combat the problem, the price comparison website has stated that 54 per cent will become more energy efficient this winter while 15 per cent will even cut down on hot meals.

Director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com Ann Robinson commented that the rise in prices is "the final nail in the coffin for affordable energy".

"The government needs to provide a strategy and regulatory environment to ensure that the lights stay on at an affordable price," she said.

Meanwhile, the Times has stated that rising energy bills have resulted in more sales for prepaid energy company Paypoint.
