Secured loans news: Over 250,000 empty homes in England

03/11/2008
The number of empty homes in England is over 250,000, but is less than the amount recorded four years ago, new statistics show.

In news that may be of note to those looking for a suitable home loan or secured online loan, there were 279,281 empty houses in England in April 2007, compared to 308,438 four years previously, figures from HBOS state.

Some 17 local authorities (LAs) have empty homes, with nine of these LAs located in the north-west of the country.

Halifax chief executive Martin Ellis said the reduction in empty properties was "highly encouraging".

"Nonetheless, it is concerning that the existence of empty homes remains a significant problem in a number of areas, particularly in the north of England," he added. "In some cases, the proportion of empty homes is more than double the national average."

In related homeowner loans news, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors recently published a statement related to home information packs (Hips).

The organisation said it had previously warned the government that Hips were "unfit for purpose".
